True Romance – circa 1993
Written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott, True Romance is a CLASSIC.

Played by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette – Clarance and Alabama are the happy couple who meet in the cinema when she is hired to give him a HAPPY birthday.

After they get it on and she confesses her call girl antics on his roof top, they go to the town hall and get married then get matching tattoos. He then kills her pimp steels his suitcase of coke and they get in the pink car and go to LA where the real fun begins.

A fan of the polka dot, don’t be fooled by Alabama’s air head exterior the girl can handle herself…

…and a rather large gun.

Oh and Samuel L makes a brief appearance looking fly as hell before he is shot by the white rasta pimp.

After Clarence tracks down the pimp and kills him, he comes home tells Alabama and she cry’s tears of joy…

NOTE* Red nails are key to her look.

Anyways, after they arrive in LA they hook up with Dick (Michael Rapaport), Clarence’s best friend who helps them shift the drugs. Dick gets some help from his pal Elliott who is personal assistant to big shot producer Lee.
Elliott calls Lee and sets up the meeting.
In the meantime, Alabama goes back to the hotel where she is greeted by the bloke who wants his drugs back.
Undoubtedly the best scene in the film. Alabama is knocked around by the drug guy, even after a beating she manages to plunge a cork screw into her attacker then rub soap in his eyes then finish him off with the cork screw. Before grabbing his gun shooting him and beating him with it.

Its intense.

Elliot is flossing with a girl and a sample of the drugs getting a BJ while speeding in his car, he then gets pulled over by the popo and tries to make the girl hide the drugs. She’s not having it and throws the white stuff all over Elliott after he calls her a whore.
BUSTED!!!!!!!
As a get out of jail free card, Elliott agrees to be a mole for the police and sets up his peoples when they meet to exchange drugs for moolah.
Needless to say there is a happy ending, despite the big mess and three way stick up, practically everyone dies except for Clarence and Alabama.
Then they escape to Mexico have a kid and live happily ever after. Ahhhhhhh.
Boomerang – The boys circa 1992
A player who’s about to be played…but good GOD ALMIGHTY he’s got style. Boomerang is a classic story of love, friendship and power dressing. Although the girls are up on their accessories game, the boys are coming back strong with an explosion of demi role necks and graphic knitwear fully in toe.

Here Eddy sports a strong look, in a red wool blazer with black leather trim, and black demi roll neck peeping through. This colour combo is a 90s classic and provides the instant power-glam factor. Rarely seen on men I for one think Eddy pulls this palette off flawlessly.

The supporting role of “Bony T” played by a very thin and young Chris Rock raises the style stakes. Here Chris sports some fabulous braces that holds up those baggy green and red edged denims around that skinny waist, with what else but of course, a black demi roll neck.

Eddy up’s the tempo on glamour in black and cream, when he goes for dinner at “Lavendar Hill” at the home of Miss Lady Eloise. He is practically raped over dinner but holds it together in what can only be described as a collarless high roll neck shirt. If you know the proper term for this garment please do let me know.

Chris sports a mustard yellow graphic wonder, that simply speaks for itself.

Eddy is seriously mixing it up with a grey demi.

Martin Lawrence, David Alan Grier and Eddy hit the gym in true style. Afro-centric sweatshirt from Martin, while Eddy goes simple in a grey Howard varsity hoodie, David gets brave with some layering and slim fit grey t.

David is the dark horse of this film, sure he cant get the girl but the man knows how to wear a coat. Here he rocks black watch check with either a brown corduroy or suede collar – either way it works.

Martin in a graphic knit beauty that combines autumn hues and primary colours to perfection.

And finally David wins the style contest hands down in my eyes with the bold masculine use of the double collar pop.
Boomerang – the girls circa 1992

Lela Rochon enters as Eddies first love interest, a few sandwiches short of a picnic but the girl sure can accessorize.

Body-con pink perfection for a flawless first date ensemble from Lela. Shame it turns out she has a hammer time situation going on in the foot department.

Tisha Campbell plays the nosy bitter loud mouth neighbour but in her brief moment on the screen still manages to bring something to the table with a selection of interesting outerwear, knitwear and gold earrings.

Eartha Kitt plays the provocative Lady Eloise, proving the mature woman can still have game in an emerald green get up with matching head band.

Leading lady and bitch du jour Robin Givens set the rules for power dressing, she’s HOT and she knows it.

Grace Jones up’s the glamour stakes with Strange’s risque crotchless pvc and transparent choices.

3D mirrored cone shades WTF… I need a pair of these.

Even the kids in this film have some serious style game in double denim, junior cross colours and pan-African headwear.

Halle Berry starts off as Miss nice sweet artist girl and then switches it up after “Love should of brought his ass home last night”
Speaking of which the sound track to this film is a classic, featuring tracks from Baby Face, Boyz II Men, PM Dawn and a Tribe Called Quest. Check out all the tracks HERE
My sisters CHIPPENDALE playing cards
haaaaa exposed!! Why did I find these in my sisters box of things from her teenage years…why oh why??

Oh good LORD they are back in 2009…. one thing that definitely should have been left in the 90s.

ewwwwwwwww.
Max Volume… time to play
Family member and resident DJ Max Volume talks me through his solid collection of recreational wonders, from Ghost Busters to WWF and Wimpy party badges he kept it all…
Boglins… “Fugly, monster toys hit trend sometime in the early 90s (see also My Pet Monster who’s been given the MOP makeover for Mishka’s fall tees 2010 shhhhhh it’s a secret)”
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles… “Four testudines that need no intro. If you were 8 yrs old in 1989 and didn’t watch the cartoon, own the figures, collect the cards or rinse all your pocket money on the arcade game – gut gut gutted.”
Rubbers…” My sister had a dried rubber collection. They came in every shape, size and flavour, but they’d wreck your drawings if you only let em.”
Time Boy Key Chain… “Easily my favourite thing to have kept from childhood. But it’s quite sickening imagining the horrific work conditions this plastic tut was probably produced under. Still, it’s badboy as it gets.”

The Real Ghostbusters… “Dun kno. Super Fright Features smash it up. Granny Ghost Gross and Mr. Stay Puft don’t play.”

Nintendo… “Legendary. Remember the film The Wizard? Wikipedia that shit now”
Wimpy Badges… “How tired did Wimpy parties get? Shattered is the answer. Only the cheapo kids would have em. At least McD’s had toadstool seats.”

WWF… “What you mean it’s not real?”
A Low Down Dirty Shame – Jada Pinkett circa 1994

Kiss curl-a- licious!!

Head to toe red leather Frime – somehow she makes it work.

Forever versatile, surprisingly Jada pulls off “gangster” excellently in an oversized two piece lemon and sky blue tracksuit.
Aaron Rose… Makes Something Out of Nothing

“BEAUTIFUL LOSERS celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.
In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of like-minded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.
Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.”

Aaron Rose founder of the Alleged gallery and director of the film was skyped into the London screening at the ICA after the film for a chat…
What was your motivation for making the film?
We wanted to make a film that came from the inside rather than someone from the outside sensationalise it or tell a slightly different story than what really happened. So the film ended up being a collaboration between myself and all the artists – who then had a say in the final product.
Alleged Gallery – Ludlow Street – Lower East Side NYC
Were all the artists up for it straight away?
There was a lot of trickery involved in getting those interviews. Some of the artists were totally cool and then other people just weren’t into it at all and we had to set up trick situations where next thing they knew they were sitting in front of a camera.
Chris Johanson mopping up before his “s.w.p.” exhibition, Prince st. 1998
How old is the oldest footage?
It is going back to 90-91, with some of the earlier gallery footage in 93-94. Alleged gallery actually kicked off in 1992 but we weren’t thinking about footage, I kick myself all the time about that. At the time people were shooting a lot of skate videos, we found at the end of those tapes full of skate tricks was party footage in the gallery, which we used in the movie for all the archival stuff.

Alleged Gallery – Washington Street NYC
Did you have in mind when you started what you wanted the audience to take from the film?
Yes, that was one thing from the beginning for me personally, and everyone that was involved in the movie. We wanted to make something that was inspiring and that was empowering to people that told a story that anybody could relate to, and the fact that it happened to be set in the world of street art was secondary. The important message was you can do anything you want to do as long as you have the motivation to do it and some friends that are willing to help you. That was what we kept going for and that was our checks and balances through out the whole editing process.
Stephen Powers
Do you feel happier working across the arts rather than just focusing on the gallery side of things?
I think so, its something that is very typical of the younger generation. The idea that you don’t need a stick to one thing, you make a magazine, a film, play in a band, have art shows… and its ok. You don’t have to choose a major in life. The access to materials for creating things is so readily available you don’t have to be one thing anymore, its easy to jump around and people just accept that.
Tell us about the workshops you are doing?
The workshops are going great, they are called “Make Something” they came about when we decided to take the small budget we had for promotion of the film and open an art school for high school kids, since the film opened in the US we have taught 2000 kids. We are actually in the process of opening a permanent school house in L.A. – partnering with the Kanye West foundation, he found out about it and is now helping us put it together. So its pretty exciting we are going to have an actual school called “Make Something”.

My Father the Hero – Katherine Heigl circa 1994

Taking swimwear to the next level Kathy sports a white thong swimsuit – there are no words.

High wasted white denim shorts and a plaid low back swimsuit combined with french plait – it just works.

Same formula different colours this girl was young but had all the essential beachwear down to a T! Not to mention giving us a well needed refresher course on 90s hair…

OH THE TOPSIE TAIL, where have you been? Note* strange plastic loop contraption necessary to achieve this one.

Classic.

Fishtail also known as inside out french plait topped off with an oversized navy scrunchie. Although I think she may have over done it with the scrunchie, actually scratch that I’ll allow it as she is sporting nautical stripes and she is on a speed boat. Below, I’m loving the high pony green scrunchie combo.

Padded red headband – dont forget to push forward to achieve the slight quiff.
Get busy with the fizzy…
I won one of these from BBC’s Live and Kicking when I called in and played the phone in compition with Wakefield. Fun but tastes like carbon dioxide flavoured poop.
ha.
